Hello, dear non-forgotten…

We finally give some sign of life. No. We haven’t forgotten you.

Some of you may think: “But what might these two fools be doing in Galicia?” Others would say: “We don’t know a thing about Fina and Daniel” And others...: “At least they send us photos!”

Well, it’s true that it’s been a very long time; we don’t even know how much, that we don’t send you some news and photos. But, as it’s said in France “Tout arrive à qui sait attendre” and in Spain “Nunca es tarde si la dicha es buena”. (It is never late if happiness is good) Last winter we didn’t do anything at home. Daniel was working outside; Fina as a teacher at Sarria’s school. We only had the weekends to take care of ourselves, of the house and of Jaco and Beo in the middle of a doggy youth crisis.

>In March of last year, at the end of Daniel’s contract, we began, by obligation, to fix the entrance courtyard. We cemented by making a terrace and setting a fence to delimit a place reserved for the puppies. Also, we had to remake the gardens and replant what Jaco and Beo had destroyed in their “doggy youth loneliness waiting for pampering from their owners” crisis.

On the same date, motivated by the departure of the director, the drive of her colleagues and the uncertainty of the renewal of her secondment, Fina set out to prepare a management project and propose her candidacy for the position.

During this time, Daniel took care of the garden that would give us a good harvest, especially pepper and tomato. The summer, very hot and not very humid, was very favourable for this type of crops. Unfortunately, and by beginner mistake, we didn’t eat green beans. That’s something we learn for the next few years. Once again, we made preserves and jams (bitter orange (Sevillanas), strawberry and raspberry, lemon, red and yellow plums, green tomato, figs and zucchini). In addition, the terraces of the garden, supported by the house, have seen the light with stones given away and collected from an old house. At the same time, taking advantage of the unevenness of the land, we prepared a concrete tank to collect rainwater in order to irrigate the garden. Between so much occupation and/or concern, we had little time left to enjoy our daily life, not being able to give hospitality according to our wishes, to all the pilgrims that we would have liked.

This winter, we started the arrangement of the cellar and the future room above it. The cleaning and restoration of the old beams collected in the construction of the house has been tedious, but they are already in place and the pine floor is in place including all the trimmings. What a change!!!

During these months, and from the beginning, Fina spends more time at school than at home, trying to solve the pharaonic task that awaits her every day. Meanwhile, we have also been discovering a little more Galicia. Thus, one day, walking towards Orense, crossing the Ribeira Sacra (wine growing area), the meanders of the Miño River offered us a spectacle of mist rising from its banks. Another day, we welcomed in Sarria the arrival of the Three Wise Men on January 5 with their illuminated carriages.

>Also, we took part in a slaughter. With half a pig, we prepared our sausages, chorizos, salted meats and other prepared meats. They were intense moments of great interest, in short, an immersion in traditional Galician gastronomic culture. Now, since the snow season is over, we are thinking about preparing the gardens at the entrance of the house, and all the ideas that come to mind so as to improve “LA CANSERA”.

Finally, let me tell you that we have a better Internet connection, since we have created a SKYPE address. This allows us, via video conference and webcam, to talk to you and see you.
