LA CANSERA DEL CAMINO

PASSING THE TORCH: «LA CANSERA» IS FOR SALE

¬
These years spent at La Cansera are like a metaphor for the way itself. Every moment has left a mark on our skin, just as each stage of the Camino does on so many pilgrims; landscapes, encounters, doubts, exhaustion, blisters, joys… This is the way, with its ups and downs and the occasional steep climb; a school of life.

It is well known that many pilgrims arriving in Santiago experience an indescribable emotion, and it is through this very metaphor that we wish to announce that we have reached the Plaza del Obradoiro, and the emotion inevitably tightens our throats.

It is a difficult challenge to summarise seventeen years of our “being” on the Camino de Santiago. That is why, even though we do not wish to weary you, we feel it is necessary to share some of our “feelings”, among other reasons, and most importantly, out of gratitude..

It was in 2008 that we arrived in Paradela (Lugo), carried by a deep sense of gratitude for all we had received as pilgrims, and with the enthusiasm of a life project dedicated to hospitality which became living on the Camino de Santiago and welcoming pilgrims with open arms, something we have done since 2010, when the first basic repairs to the house made it possible.

We leave to the intimacy of personal memory the many adventures and moments shared with the countless family members and friends who, through their volunteered hands, resources, time, encouragement, listening, and above all, their faith in our project (or, some might say, madness, considering the initial state of the house), have helped us since those challenging early days.

We would like to share with you a visual record of this transformation in this video.

You are all part of this miracle and its story, from its very beginnings to each stage along the way, and we must express our deepest gratitude to the pilgrims whose presence has strengthened us day by day. Pilgrims, we dedicate these lines to all of you, as many have left a lasting mark on us, and some have even become lifelong friends.

It has been a time of learning and growth. We have learned from the most practical aspects of restoring the house and its surroundings, caring for the animals, tending the vegetable garden, preserving food… as well as adapting to village life. Yet, the most beautiful lessons and growth have come from our encounters with the pilgrims, both inside our home and at the table by the door, where they could find the cherished Km. 100 stamp for their credentials, fresh water, and a resting place (following our house’s motto), often accompanied by chit-chat, laughter, and hugs. We carry with us their stories, their languages, their cultures, their music and songs; a wealth of experiences that have continually opened our minds and hearts, without forgetting the countless hugs given and, above all, received.

This has been a truly wonderful chapter in our lives, and we have shared it as much as we could with those who crossed our threshold, whether friends, family, or pilgrims, and also through our website, which we have built at the same time as our home and daily life with so much love; a window that has allowed us to share our experiences and the many stories of these years.

We have fulfilled our dream: to offer hospitality to pilgrims in our home… what more could we ask for? And for that:

THANK YOU ALL

Time has passed, and our years and health no longer allow us to continue… And just as every pilgrim arriving in Santiago must eventually “return home” to continue their way through life, so must we.

We are setting off towards a new destination, but La Cansera remains to continue to treasure stories to tell and we are sure that this little piece of paradise will continue to offer a magical life to whoever lives in it.

WE PASS THE TORCH!
